About Us
Founded in 1998 by a team of senior software engineers, Breakthrough Technologies is a team of dedicated engineers who create custom software solutions for complex business problems. The owners of Breakthrough Technologies, Doug Wilson and Randy Knapp have almost 40 years of experience developing state-of-the-art software.
We are a software development firm with extensive experience in business enterprise systems development, content management and testing systems, and medical applications and devices. Focused in the Midwest, we work with small and medium businesses on high-value, low risk custom, open-source, and systems integration projects. We also consult quite regularly with larger Fortune 500 clients on strategic technology and software product development strategies.
Our team members are dedicated, local professionals with a great deal of experience in a variety of technologies and industries. We leverage this knowledge across a broad range of technologies. We have designed and implemented complex solutions with rich user interfaces, high-volume data management capabilities and distributed architectures for internal systems as well as revenue-generating software products.

We realize that we can't do it all alone. We use some world class tools and employ some great partners. Partnerships can be a central feature in any project, from the development of the idea to the actual implementation. We know there is a big difference in software that you create that you pay people to use (back-office systems, etc.) and software you create that you want people to pay to use (your customers). One of the critical aspects of crossing this chasm is possessing elegant product and user interface design. We don't just mean a professional, clean look. How do we achieve this? We don't do it. In fact we learned long ago that excellent software user interface design, or human factors engineering, is a very specific art practiced by a small number of people. We utilize two local teams for our interface design: both have track records with companies like Apple and Yahoo, both are small, and both have an established relationship.
