Revolutionary Item Banking System

PROFILE:

CAT became CAT*ASI, CAT*ASI became Promissor, and Promissor became Promteric.  And now, ten years later the same content management and delivery platform that we built in 1999 still powers a subset of Pearson's testing programs.  We are very proud of our collaboration with this great team that we learned so much from, and we feel that together we changed the testing industry.

STORY:

In 1998, CAT (Computer Adaptive Technologies) was a struggling assessment company, poised to do great things.  They had presence in a variety of markets, extremely dedicated and talented staff and psychometricians, and leadership that brought in the right team and capital to build one of the most powerful testing platforms of its time.

Breakthrough Technologies, then just a young team of engineers, was brought in to build out this vision and create an item banking and test delivery system that would truly reset expectations for their entrenched competitors.

A year later, CATBuilder went into beta, and 6 months after that, production.  CATBuilder was revolutionary in that it allowed seamless integration of item banking and item authoring, test construction and publication to a Global testing network all from one Windows application connected to CAT's global Internet delivery system.

Time from item editing to publishing in test centers went from 2 weeks to 20 minutes.

Later, Breakthrough further collaborated with CAT to produce the world's first assessment app store, an innovative item presentation solution that was extensible by third parties using Flash and Java, and all managed through a centralized library.
