Breakthrough Sustainability

Breakthrough Corporate Policies

Breakthrough Technologies and its employees are committed to delivering sustainable solutions or operating in a way that can sustain life and diversity on our planet.  This isn't just marketing greenwashing.  Here are some of the ways that we are putting our money where our mouth is:

Bike and Train Subsidies

Every Breakthrough employee gets a subsidy every month for taking the train.  If you ride a bike to work, you get even more!

A Paler Shade of White

Notice that our contracts and wireframes are printed on paper that isn't as white as you're used to?  That's because all Breakthrough paper is 85% or better recycled material.

Recycling

We make sure that all recyclable refuse gets to the recycling center.  We are a software company, and pizza boxes do cause a problem here!

Additionally, here are some projects where we are working hard to create a better world:

In 2008, Breakthrough initiated a project to help a local economics consulting firm develop investor and consumer models for the Department of Energy.  Working with exciting open source agent-based simulation tools, Argonne National Laboratories, and some of the smartest economists at the University of Chicago, Breakthrough engineered their models in Java and deployed them within the RePast simulation environment.  These models will allow the DoE to set policy for incenting conversion and understanding adoption rates of a national US automobile hydrogen-based economy.

Breakthrough donated its time to help the Great Lakes Information Network review several proposals on creating new information systems to understand better our utilization of the Great Lakes resources, and incent more responsible behavior through direct management and information services.

Breakthrough's work with the CePort Building Service Portal is first and foremost an energy savings technology that allows building managers to optimize the performance of their buildings in real-time.  This integration framework allows a variety of eco-friendly behaviors, such as LEED certification, carpooling, demand-response management and other progressive ideas to solve the energy crisis in commercial and residential spaces.
